Who needs an official project announcement when you’ve got podcasts? On the latest episode of Las Culturistas with Matt Rogers and Bowen Yang, Jennifer Lawrence—on press tour for her new film Die My Love (pictured above)—spilled the beans about a new project she has in the works with longtime friend Emma Stone. “I don’t know if I can announce this, but I’m just gonna … Emma Stone and I are producing a Miss Piggy movie and Cole [Escola] is writing it.”
Variety did their homework and confirmed the movie’s existence with the Muppet powers-that-be: “A film about the temperamental diva puppet is in early development at Disney, which owns the rights to the Muppets, according to knowledgeable sources.”
Miss Piggy needs no introduction, but the diva was created by Frank Oz and has been around since 1974, when an early incarnation of the character first appeared on a television special; she arrived somewhat more fully formed on The Muppet Show in 1976. It is impossible not to quote Wikipedia here, just for the delightful phrase “Miss Piggy began as a minor chorus pig.”
It’s not entirely clear who might play the iconic creature, though when pressed as to whether Lawrence and Stone might co-star in the film, Lawrence said, “I think so. We have to… It’s fucked up [that we haven’t done a movie together].”
The topic came up when Lawrence was discussing Escola’s award-winning one-person-show Oh Mary!, and how she considered taking a turn in the title role on Broadway before facing the realities of theatrical work: “eight shows a week and like six weeks of rehearsal.” Lawrence’s response: “Do you have daycare there?”[end-mark]
